YouTube Athlete Video of the Week: Who Can Stop the Oliver Twist?

If you are a sports fan and watched any sports related show this week, you are bound to have seen the amazing hockey trick shot made by nine-year-old Oliver Wahlstrom. Wahlstrom has been the talk of the sports world this past week and deservedly so. The clip below is from TD Bank's Mini 1-on-1 tournament during halftime of the Bruins game and was ESPN's #1 play of the day on Wednesday of this week.

Maybe Oliver learned a little from the clip below.

For a 9-year-old to be able to do this... In an interview with ESPN on Thursday night, Oliver was up past his bedtime talking about his shot and how accurate he is with it. He said that out of twenty attempts, he will get it right only once. His father is an ex-college hockey player and a coach in Maine and admits to teaching Oliver the twisting shot. Even after a lot of practice on ice and in his home, Oliver states that the shot is still hard to score with and that he has never tried it in a live game. The fact that he tried it in a national one-on-one tournament is impressive, but scoring and making the goalie look like he was watching cartoons on TV is even more impressive.

This kind of talent and national media attention only makes me question what will become of this kid in the future. After all the hype and attention he is getting from this amazing shot, he will now have many people whispering in his ear. From his father, to prospective agents, coaches, friends, etc., he will now have to deal with a lot of pressure and hype to live up to. We have seen child athletes with great potential never make it, as nothing is promised in athletics. Many child actors have the same problem. And although this is a great time in young Oliver's life, it is also a very important time that can make or break his hockey career.
